Although summer doesn’t officially start until June 21st, Memorial Day Weekend is typically when New Jersey celebrates the beginning of beach days, outdoor festivals and other warm-weather activities.

There’s no shortage of events to attend all around the state. Whether you’ve got kids to entertain or are just hanging out with some friends, the possibilities are endless. To make it easier, we’ve rounded up some of our must-see events happening in and around New Jersey this year. We’ve even included some back-up plans, in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Here are five events to check out this year:

Wildwoods Kite Festival

Spectators travel from all over the country to see this kite festival in action. The festival begins Friday afternoon, and features tons of different events including kite demos, family games, auctions and more. You shouldn’t miss the illuminated kite fly that happens at 9 p.m. on the Friday of the festival. This event is also free for visitors.

Jersey Shore Food Truck Festival

If you’re a food lover, this event shouldn’t be missed. You’ll have a chance to sample from over 40 different food trucks including a wide range of cuisine from New Jersey’s favorite spots. At this festival, you can have pizza for lunch, tacos for a snack and a lobster roll for dinner. Admission to the park costs $5 and each truck will sell a variety of food priced per item. Check out the family fun day on either Sunday or Monday for pony rides, face painting and a bounce house.

Fleet Week

Memorial Day is all about the veterans, so why not come out and support the military during Fleet Week. There are a ton of events happening at Liberty State Park, where you’ll get to see first hand the capabilities. Meet the service men and women that protect our country, and watch different military demonstrations as well as drill team and band performances.

Bradley Beach Festival

If you’re looking to make the most out of the season’s first beach weekend, head over to the Bradley Beach Festival. Here you’ll find tons of different food and craft vendors, as well as games for kids of all ages. They’ll be something for everyone here, and you can still take full advantage of the sun and sand on Bradley Beach.

Rainy Day Plans

While most Memorial Day Weekend events are planned to happen rain or shine, we know not everyone will want to fight bad weather to enjoy outdoor festivals. The good news is, there are tons of great indoor activities all around New Jersey to enjoy should the weather turn sour. LEGOLand Discovery Center is a perfect day trip for families with young kids and has locations in Philadelphia and Westchester. If Legos aren’t your thing, the Liberty Science Center offers tons of fun activities for kids of all ages and gives them an educational experience as well.
