The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has declared August 10th to 16th of every year as Safe + Sound Week!
What is Safe + Sound Week?
Every year, OSHA, along with other federal and local stakeholders and organizations, conduct and support nationwide campaigns and other programs intended to raise awareness for workplace safety. It’s your business’s chance to make a positive impact and change in the culture of workplace health and safety in your locality.
The program is open to any and all types of businesses and workplaces across different industries. One of the biggest goals of the campaign is to get as many businesses, workers, and employers to take part in and maintain a work culture that prioritizes and practices safety.
Fast Facts
According to data from the National Safety Council (NSC), one worker gets injured on the job every seven seconds. That’s 510 in an hour and 4.6 million preventable workplace injuries every year!
From the most recently available data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), 2018 recorded over 5,000 workplace fatalities in 2018. This was a 2% increase from the statistics of the previous year.
A lot of these problems are preventable, but it takes a group effort between employers and employees alike to put more premium in the safety and soundness of the workplace.
The aforementioned data from the NSC also shows that slips, trips and falls, overexertion, and contact with objects/equipment in the workplace are some of the most common causes of the leading types of workplace injuries that include sprains and tears, soreness, and lacerations or cuts.
Ways Your Company Can Take Part in the Safe + Sound Week Activities
There are two main ways your company can take part in the Safe + Sound program: to host or to participate.
Interested hosts can create and conduct events that allow companies to showcase their own workplace safety programs to show other companies how it is possible, what makes it work, or how other companies can improve their own. Due to the pandemic, most (if not all) of the events for this year’s Safe + Sound Week are webinar events. Simply visit or check out the OSHA website to sign up, register, and promote your event! After your event, your company is eligible to claim a downloadable participation badge recognizing your Safe + Sound efforts.
Not ready to showcase your safety programs or are simply looking to learn? That’s alright, too! You can check out OSHA’s Safe + Sound resources to register and attend the confirmed events within your industry or locality. The NSC also has a lineup of activities that you can check out and participate in.
